life and work

Joséf Pagés was probably born in Écija, Seville,

around 1740.

His brother Juan Pagés also became a noted guitar maker.

It is believed that Joséf was the first of the brothers to go to Cádiz around 1760.

He established his workshop on Calle de la Almargura in 1809.

A leading member of the Cádiz school, Joséf,

closely followed all the innovations

that Francisco Sanguino had introduced,

but with further development

to dominate the sound box with the props,

an approach that later creators such as José Recio,

Antonio de Torres and Francisco Gonzales also adopted.

Pagés began with systems of three devices,

like the first guitars of Sanguino and Benedid;

his later instruments used five. His guitars greatly influenced Louis Panormo,

who used similar fan strut designs and

similar proportions for the body of the guitar. The great Spanish composer and guitarist Fernando Sor

He appreciated Pagés’ guitars very much, stating:

“The guitars to which I have always given

preference are those of Alonso de Madrid,

Pagés and Benediz de Cádiz, Joseph and

Manuel Martinez from Malaga…”

The composer Dionisio Aguado

also mentions the Pagés brothers

Among the creators that I would recommend.

the surviving guitars

Known works of Joséf Pagés date from 1790 to 1822.
